If you want to be active in issues
affecting the community, the state, and the nation, or just well-informed --
you've come to the right place.
In the last year, we
have been actively involved in local issues, opposing the repeal of the changes to the Anti-Discrimination
Ordinance and monitoring the City Commission's meetings on rental inspection and the south end lot 9.
We are also involved in studies of state and national issues, which will
ultimately result in adopting positions and then taking action on those issues. Check out our newsletter, the Voter, to read
more about what we've been doing.
The League of Women Voters at all levels --
local, state, and national -- is dedicated to promoting informed and active
citizen participation in government, and to promoting government that is open
and responsive to citizens.

the federal government in PreK-12 education:

Education, national core standards, the impact of core standards on
special needs students, and student assessments
Panelists were Doug Messer, President USD 383 School
Board, Usha Reddi, District Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and
Carol Adams, the district's Executive Director for Teaching and Learning. |
LWVM/RC is currently involved in three
studies:
- Role of the Federal Government in Pre-k through Grade 12
Public Education: equity, funding, and standards/education. This is a
national League study and discussion with consensus in October.
- Privatization: This national study will begin in
November. Our local League has a head start in this study, as we have a
privatization position that was completed in 2003.
- Restudy of the LWV-Kansas Finance Position: LWVK
will undertake a two-year study of Kansas tax policies, focusing on tax
exemptions, tax credits (transparency as to who benefits), income tax, and
property tax to see which tax policies meet the economic goals. Our current
position was last updated in 1993.
