Mark your calendar to attend the Edith L. Her topic will be serving in the Kansas legislature from a woman's perspective and her presentation will touch on health issues in legislature. In the Kansas Senate, Ms. Schmidt is Chair of the Joint Committee on Rules and Regulations Committee and Vice-chair of the Public Health and Welfare Committee. She is a pharmacist who is married to a medical doctor with an interest in health care, education and the economy.

The Edith L. Stunkel Good Government Award honors the efforts of long-time League member and public servant Edith Stunkel, who worked tirelessly to involve citizens in all levels of government. During her service as a city commissioner and throughout her life, Ms. Stunkel championed the value of informed citizenship, actively encouraged public input and citizen participation in public policy decisions and worked for transparency in government.

LWV MRC Annual Meeting
The local league's annual business meeting is in April. During the meeting league members adopt a budget and program for the year as well as elect officers. These meetings have often featured a speaker and usually include a dinner or luncheon. Members will be notified by mail and e-mail about the time, place and agenda for the Annual Meeting.

Forums
The league sponsors two kinds of educational forums: issue forums and candidate forums. The league may present a panel of speakers to explore an issue of local, state or national significance. The league also customarily conducts candidate forums prior to local, state and national elections as part of a voter service initiative. The league normally advertises these forums on the home page of the league's web site, in the local newspaper, on the weather channel, in The Voter (the local league's official newsletter) and by e-mail.

Social Events
The league presents the Edith Stunkel Good Government Award annually to a person who has devoted considerable time and energy to successfully promoting better government or whose leadership has advanced human dignity or improved the quality of life for the community. READ MORE AND VIEW LIST OF PAST RECIPIENTS Additionally, the league plays host for informal gatherings for new members and for members who wish to discuss local issues in an informal setting.

LWVK Convention and Council The state league convention, the state league business meeting when officers are elected and the state league program is adopted, is every odd-numbered year in April. The state league council, every even-numbered year in April, features speakers on state government issues and includes a business session.

League Day at the Capitol
The state league also plays host for the League Day at the Capitol each spring. Members from across the state come to Topeka to meet with legislators and hear speakers talk about state issues.

League of Women Voters National Convention and Council
The national league convenes its national convention every even numbered years and its national council every odd numbered years in June. See www.lwv.org for details.
