1) What changes, if any, would you favor to make county commission meetings more open and accessible to the public?
I would move the Thursday meeting to late afternoon –early evening. I would televise the meetings and publish all agendas.
2) Do you believe Riley County should hire a County Administrator? Please explain your position.
My main platform is to hire a county manager. This would make all activities at the county level more professional and efficient. It would save dollars now being used for unneeded pay studies and lawsuits. It would allow us to do strategic planning and make the county a unified, efficient structure.
3) Which do you think should take priority, preserving prime agricultural land (both crop and grasslands) within the county or economic development on that same land? What factors would you consider when evaluating zoning requests?
I am very interested to hear the outcome of the ongoing county planning board study. We must preserve our agricultural land. We must allow development to happen where it does not impact previously built areas – for example, exacerbate flood plane issues.
4) Would you vote in favor of zoning that would allow commercial development or housing in low-lying areas that occasionally experience flooding?
Only if the area was built up enough that they would be out of the flood plane. I think it is time to look at impact fees for those building in areas which adversely impact others.
